Food for the healthy soul

Soul food can be good food

Food is an important part of the American lifestyle eating being a center stone for meetings, celebrations and socializing.

According to The Vancouver Sun, one third of Americans are obese or 30 pounds overweight. Data collected during the 2010 Census shows there are over 308 million people in the United States with just under 13 percent of that number represented by blacks or African Americans.

African Americans have the highest rate of high blood pressure according to an article on timesunion.com. Traditionally, members of black households grow up with foods that have been deep fried and are calorie heavy. With a major generation gap between blacks who grew up in the 1930s to now, recipes passed down from generations before receive modern changes creating food that is still traditional to the culture, but include more healthier options.

Check out the video below and watch as a traditional southern meal, also known as soul food, is prepared in a Chicago south suburban household.
